"What do Scientists do?"
Students’ Evolving Conceptions
Susan Marston, PhD
Professor of Education Saint Mary’s College of California
Are we scientists? Is there value in being scientists? Where do we learn to be scientists?
Dr. Marston has been passionately interested in science and what it means to be a scientist throughout her ten years of teaching elementary students and ten years of teaching in higher education. She will examine the question "What Do Scientists Do?" a study based on interviews with third grade students and again ten years later. At both levels, students’ conceptions of where science is conducted (classroom or home) and what scientists do has helped to shape their perceptions of themselves as scientists. At both levels students reported that they preferred hands-on methods of learning. Dr. Marston offers three suggestions: 1. help students break away from traditional stereotypes of scientists; 2. model what it means to "think like a scientist; and 3. make science learning hands on.
Dr. Marston. has always had a passion for science. She is eager to share her studies with AAUW members, guests and award winning students at the Scholarship Awards program, Tuesday evening, April 20.
