A Library Transformed by OML Volunteers!
Welcome back! Jan Coe is returning to Burckhalter and will be tutoring in the first grade class. We know the teacher, Ms. Allen, and all the students will be delighted to have Jan in the classroom. We also welcome a new volunteer to the library: Marlene Marcus, friend of Andrea and member of the San Ramon/Danville Branch.
The principal, Dhameera Ahmad, has named the library (which has been entirely staffed by OML members since 1994) and the OML tutors on her list of assets at Burckhalter School.
ALL of the teachers have requested OML tutors and everyone at the school is very appreciative of our contributions to the students.
If YOU have been thinking about tutoring or volunteering in the library, please call any one of us listed above and we will be happy to tell you about this rewarding activity. I am often told by one of you that you would like to tutor but have never taught and are unsure about what you would do. Any of us would be happy to arrange for you to visit a classroom, talk with a teacher, and observe the tutoring process. Many materials are available in our tutoring room, but often we use the classroom materials and work with a child who needs
- to read again and discuss what has been assigned in class
- to review words, especially prefixes and suffixes, in the reading assignment
- to understand and express ideas orally and in writing
- to complete a worksheet and understand the questions
One-on-one tutoring can have astonishing results! Many students have never had someone sit with him or her to read or write or practice arithmetic. The students are bright and eager to learn and YOU might be the person who can start them on the road to success!
