AAUW Orinda-Moraga-Lafayette seeks high school girls who are self-aware, responsible, and motivated to be trained as facilitators, mentors, and leaders of Sister-to-Sister, a mentoring program for middle school girls that culminates in a one-day Summit held each spring.
S2S is a proven successful model for girls helping other girls. High school girls can easily relate to the confusion and challenges faced by their younger peers. Conversely, research shows that while girls in the early years of adolescence suddenly have difficulty relating to adults, they are willing to look up to and listen to someone just a little older than themselves.
Following each Summit, high school girls have told us they feel they have more to offer the younger girls. The middle school girls enjoy their time with the older girls so much that they leave wanting more time together too. This year we want to make this possible through an ongoing mentoring program that begins in January and continues until the Summit at the end of April. The fall training sessions will prepare you for this mentoring relationship.
Input from the girls and leadership are key to the success of the Sister-to-Sister Summit. The 35 carefully chosen high school girls work together as a team with AAUW members to develop creative ideas for everything from speakers to games as well as design elements for each Summit. This year select middle school girls will have a part in this process. Imagine the collective feeling of success and accomplishment when you've seen your ideas come to fruition on the Summit day!
The facilitator training includes listening skills, questioning techniques, group management skills, team building, and leadership. In addition, materials are presented on topics that will be discussed at the Summit such as body image, girl-to-girl relationships, girl-to-boy relationships, peer pressure, and the complexities of family life. Speakers from local agencies and local professionals are often invited to present pertinent information at the training.
Applications are accepted in September of each academic year. Join us in making a difference in the life of younger girl! To learn more, see our Recruitment Brochure.
High school facilitators are required to attend all of the approximately monthly training sessions between September and the culminating event in the spring. We understand that illness, family events, and unforeseen circumstances can arise, but we ask for your commitment to seeing the program through when you apply.
All training sessions are held on Sunday evenings from 4-7 p.m. as follows:
